1. Timing
Use the reading time at the beginning of the examination to gain a picture of what is being asked overall. Identify the various topics being covered, and make a mental note to yourself of which questions you will do first. You may annotate the question paper during this time.
Divide your time in proportion to the marks on offer. To allocate your time multiply the marks for each question by 1.8 minutes: thus each 10 mark question should take you 10×1.8=18 minutes.
2. Planning
Read the requirements of the question carefully, at least twice, and highlight what you are being asked to address.
Jot down relevant ideas on an answer plan and keep to your time allocation.
3. Answering
Write your response neatly and in a logical order. Aim to identify and explain the relevant issues, state and apply the relevant law to the requirement of the question, and keep conclusions and recommendations to the end.
Do not write a length dissertation. The examiner wants concise and structured comment.
Adopt a professional, polite manner in your answers. This is a professional exam, and you should give a professional impression. Keep statements simple and accurate.
4. Presentation
Write in black ink only, never blue, red or green.
Use headings, subheadings, indentation and bullet points to give your answer structure and to make it more digestible for the marker. Underline headings with a ruler.
Use a short sentence to convey each point that you are making.
Do not underline what you think are the “key words” in your answer points.
