Management activities can be classified into the broad categories of:
• strategic management, which focuses on determining the direction and structure of the organisation and developing plans and objectives for achieving this
• operational management, which can be considered as the implementation phase of strategic management—turning the strategy into reality.
Strategic management accounting provides a supporting role to managers in both categories. This section examines the activities that managers are involved in and the types of support management accountants can provide to help managers perform these activities better.
